Reason for Recommended Action/Background |
The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Division of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) administers funds provided by the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service for the operation of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for WIC Program. Under the WIC Program, the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) Community Health (CH) Branch provides services to improve the health of eligible participants in the County by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and other social services.
This Amendment provides $57,572 in COVID-19 emergency response funding, as well as $3,678 in non-COVID-19 additional funding, for Federal Fiscal Year 2019-20, which ends September 30, 2020. These funds will be used to purchase COVID-related supplies that made it possible for CH to continue providing WIC services while telecommuting during shelter in place and to prepare for safely reopening clinics for services to participants, as well as staff costs to handle program participation. Additionally, CDPH has approved the Community Health Branch to use some of this additional funding to provide technical assistance during the rollout of the new WIC management information system and transition to Electronic Benefit Transfer. |
