Reason for Recommended Action/Background
In 2019, the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) announced the availability of grant funds to provide mental health training to corrections personnel. The Probation Department was approved for a one-time grant award of $13,500 to send Standards and Training for Corrections (STC)-eligible Probation staff to new STC-certified mental health-related training through September 30, 2020. Recognizing the impact of COVID-19, the BSCC grant award has been extended by one year to allow grantees time to complete grant objectives and provide periodic progress reports to the BSCC.

Under this grant, Probation staff will receive certified behavioral health training that includes content such as signs and symptoms of mental illness; substance use disorder; trauma-informed care; stigma and bias; crisis intervention; de-escalation techniques; and suicide prevention. This training will enhance Probation Officers’ communication skills for managing clients with mental health disorders and will train officers in recognizing the need for care and when to refer or provide emergency services.
