Reason for Recommended Action/Background |
In November 2018, the District Attorney's office requested $8,318 from the California Department of Insurance's High Impact Insurance Fraud Program in order to assist in the prosecution of a high impact insurance fraud case. This case involves multiple victims and has an estimated financial loss of $2,505,782. We were awarded the requested funding on December 21, 2018.
We will be using these one-time funds for an extra help Legal Process Clerk to assist with the specific case mentioned above. This position will support the Deputy District Attorney (DDA) prosecuting this case by assisting with organizing over 30,000 pages of discovery and evidence, assisting with witness coordination, and assisting with preparation of both the competency hearing and jury trial. Services and supplies will also be funded through these funds such as binders for the over 30,000 documents. |
Collaborations (including Board advisory groups and external partner agencies) |
The District Attorney's office submitted a grant summary form to the Grant Oversight Committee before applying and was approved.
County Counsel and DFS have approved the resolution. |

Explanation (Expenditure and/or Revenue) |
Further explanation as needed: |
This new funding is included with the California Department of Insurance budget, Workers Comp and Auto Fraud. In FY 2018-2019, we budgeted appropriations and revenues higher for these two grants than will be actually realized. This is why we are not including a budget resolution to increase our budget, as we are not asking for additional expenditure authority. |
