Reason for Recommended Action/Background
As they approach fifty years of operation, the gates at the Department of Community Services campus are beginning to show clear signs of wear.  The gates, which were installed in 1970, are used on a daily basis and provide security to the County yard, are antiquated metal gates, which require manual operation. The gate on the west side is sagging due to weight, and will inevitably become inoperable in the near future.  Given that the gates need to be opened and closed manually, the risk of injury to staff increases with time should the gates suddenly fail. In addition, it is inefficient to have a staff person open and close the gates when needed and therefore they remain open during business hours, making the yard accessible to anyone and unsecured.

Community Services has requested replacing the existing gates with new wrought iron gates.  The proposed gates will be automated and accessed with remote/pinpad entry, retaining the yard status as a secured location. The general fund contingency request includes purchase and installation of the gates and access equipment, contracted work as well as General Services staff time to oversee the project and contingencies.
