Reason for Recommended Action/Background

During the Board workshop on February 14 and 15, county leadership discussed the need to update the Mission, Vision and Values which were last reviewed in 2007.  Following the workshop, the strategic planning committee convened a smaller group to discuss next steps and develop a sequence for reviewing the mission, vision and values.  Working with our consultant, Scott Winter, the subcommittee arrived at definitions for each item.

Mission - Board guided direction which encompasses community vision.

Vision - Describes the desired state of our organization that we wish to create as a result of living by our values and successfully fulfilling our mission.

Values - Express what is most important to us as public servants and colleagues while fulfilling our mission and vision.

Based upon these definitions, the Board would initiate the process by adopting a mission that would guide development of the vision and values components.  Upon completion of the mission statement, a collaborative process that engages employees at all levels will be used to update the vision and values.  Once these steps are complete, we will move forward with developing the strategic plan goals.

The purpose of this item is to obtain key phrases and words from board members that may reflect your view of our mission.  As a starting point, we reviewed our existing Mission and Vision and highlighted those words and phrases that we believe remain as a priority.
