Reason for Recommended Action/Background |
On February 12, 2017 the Emergency Medical Services Agency and Emergency Preparedness Division of the Health and Human Services Agency of Yolo County received a request from Yolo County's Office of Emergency Services to open an evacuation shelter for the evacuees impacted by the mandatory evacuation of communities in proximity to Oroville Dam; due to the potential failure of the dam’s auxiliary spillway. The initial request to prepare to stand up and open an evacuation shelter was issued at approximately 8:00 pm. By 10:30 pm, public information was already being disseminated through a variety of media to notify the public that Yolo County would open a shelter at the Yolo County Fairgrounds at 11:00 pm. The shelter was open from 11:00 pm on February 12 to 8:00 pm on February 14 when the evacuation order was lifted and repopulation was permitted. Through the duration of the evacuation shelter operation, the County housed a total of 596 evacuees, including 132 access and functional needs individuals, and 88 domestic animals. The shelter was staffed with 35 volunteer County employees, 13 staff members from facilities which were providing care for the access and functional needs evacuees, and the support of numerous County departments and the Woodland community. Following the closure of the shelter on February 14, County staff began demobilizing the shelter which was completed on February 15. |
