Background
On January 27, 2016, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy (Conservancy) Board approved 14 projects to submit formal proposals for funding through the Conservancy's Ecosystem Restoration and Water Quality Grant Program (Proposition 1 funds). The Conservancy has indicated that a resolution of support from the local land use authority will result in more favorable scoring of the final proposals. A resolution in support of the Environmental Defense Fund's request for $350,000 to implement the "Habitat Enhancement for Swainson's Hawk at Elliot Ranch" project is provided as Attachment A.
Project Description
This proposal requests $350,000 of Proposition 1 funding to support implementation of the Elliott Ranch project, an effort to enhance and restore 300 acres of Swainson’s hawk habitat on Elliott Ranch, a 1,000-acre farm located at the urban/rural boundary of West Sacramento in Yolo County within the statutory Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The projects' primary goal is to create high quality nesting and foraging habitat for Swainson’s hawk, a state-listed species, in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta by partnering with a private working landowner interested in voluntary habitat conservation that maintains agriculture productivity. Restoration funded by the grant will maintain and enhance agricultural use of the property by creating irrigated pasture; the land is currently difficult to farm due to drainage issues and commodity yields are low. |
Collaborations (including Board advisory groups and external partner agencies) |
Staff has collaborated with Delta Conservancy staff, the Yolo Habitat Conservancy, and County Counsel on this item. The Agricultural Commissioner supports the proposal. |
