Reason for Recommended Action/Background
The Yolo County Historical Collection (YCHC) is comprised of 11,000 objects which date from the 1830s to the 1930s. The collection includes textiles, agricultural equipment, paintings, archival materials, ephemera, photographs, archeological items, tools, ceramics, household items, furniture, and personal items. This collection illustrates what life was like for early Yolo County residents.

Mission

The mission of the YCHC is to both illustrate the cultural and economic growth of the individuals and families of Yolo County and create a bridge between Yolo County’s past and present through education, outreach, and exhibition of its historical objects.

Goals

The goals of the Yolo County Historical Collection are to:

1. Preserve Yolo County’s historical heritage by collecting, identifying, preserving, organizing, interpreting, and providing access to collection items that are displayed for the public through exhibitions.

2. Provide adequate facilities and enclosures for objects to ensure preservation in accordance with accepted standards of museum practice.

3. Provide expert research assistance to Yolo County government entities, nonprofit organizations, and community members while promoting the use and appreciation of the YCHC through education, outreach, and display.

4. Collaborate with local, statewide, and federal historical agencies to network, share resources, programming strengths, and to promote and develop the collection.

5. Support local ethnic communities in their work to identify, preserve, and promote their unique cultural histories and identities.

This Request for Review and Approval for a standard Collection Management Policy has been prepared after careful examination of all policies with regard to operating, administrative, legal, fiscal, research, historical or archive value, as well as to application of appropriate county, state and federal rules, ordinances, regulations and/or statutes governing collection management for historical collections.

The approval of this Collection Management Policy will help the YCHC provide industry standard policies and practices for the acquisition, deaccession, care, preservation, reference, use, and loan of items in the collection and to be in compliance with countywide standards and policies and conformance with accepted collection management practices.
Collaborations (including Board advisory groups and external partner agencies)
Yolo County Library, Archives and Records Center staff and the Yolo County Museum Curator collaborated with County Counsel on the research and development of this Collection Management Policy.
