Reason for Recommended Action/Background |
On February 24, 2009 the county entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Yolo County Resource Conservation District (RCD) to assist with the implementation of county conservation projects and plans due to the Resource Conservation District's unique expertise, capabilities and equipment. Since the approval of the original MOU, the county has recognized a need for additional services and further collaboration with the RCD due to the increased prevalence of wildland fires in the county including the County Fire in 2018 that burned over 90,000 acres in Napa and Yolo, the Sand Fire in 2019 that burned over 2,500 acres in Yolo and the LNU Complex Fire in 2020 that burned an area of nearly 400,000 acres in Lake, Napa, Sonoma, Solano, and Yolo.
Within Yolo County, the effects of the fires have resulted in an immediate need to address vegetation management and fire safety in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). With the Yolo County RCD being specifically skilled and staffed to provide these types of services the Office of Emergency Services Staff would like to coordinate with the Yolo RCD on numerous fire prevention projects that have been identified through both community and county led meetings. Projects will include vegetation management, open space restoration, and fire prevention planning and the implementation of county Fire Safe Councils. |
