Reason for Recommended Action/Background |
In 2015, the District Attorney was awarded the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant. With these funds, we were able to take Neighborhood Court from Davis and expand into Woodland and West Sacramento while also creating a separate program to address the homelessness.
With these new funds, Neighborhood Court (NHC) becomes available to more criminal justice involved individuals in Yolo County through expanded eligibility criteria. The program will provide expanded services through either the Day Reporting Center or Health and Human Services (HHSA) in an effort to increase the self-sufficiency of participants while also reducing recidivism. While expanding eligibility for more misdemeanors one significant goal is to divert 10% of the felony filings into NHC by the third year of the grant. The grant also funds expansion allowing for restorative justice conferences in Spanish. This expansion and associated grant funding was anticipated and included in the 2019-20 Adopted Budget. |
Collaborations (including Board advisory groups and external partner agencies) |
With this grant, the Neighborhood Court program will be collaborating with HHSA, Public Defender, Probation, Day Reporting Center, and the Yolo County Superior Court. County Counsel has approved the board resolution. |
