Strategic Plan Goal(s)
Safe Communities
Reason for Recommended Action/Background
According to the Centers for Disease Control, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children.  The Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency (“HHSA”) operates a Car Seat Safety Program (“Program”) through its Community Health Branch with the goal of reducing the number of injuries from motor vehicle crashes associated with children ages 0-12 by increasing the correct use of car seats.  This service is provided free of charge to residents of Yolo County.  The Program also provides a low-cost car seat program for qualifying residents, as well as conducting a class for individuals who have received a ticket for car seat misuse, and a car seat recycling program for used and unsafe car seats.

Acceptance of these donations from AAA National (“Benevity”) and AAA of Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (“AAA”) will allow HHSA to increase the services provided to target populations in the community under the Car Seat Safety Program.  Specifically, these funds will assist HHSA in purchasing and distributing approximately 55 car seats for income-eligible residents of the County and provide hands-on education to residents to ensure each car seat is properly and safely installed.  In addition, these donations will fund 2 car seat check-up events, available to all Yolo County residents to have their car seats checked for recalls, expiration, and correct installation of their car seats.

Staff recommends acceptance of these donations to support the Yolo County Car Seat Safety Program’s goal of reducing the number of injuries from motor vehicle crashes associated with children ages 0-12 years old by increasing the correct use of car seats.
