Reason for Recommended Action/Background |
As utilization of the Geographic Information System (GIS) program in Yolo County continues to expand, including more and more departments and divisions, a need for on-site training related to visualizing, creating, modifying, analyzing and sharing GIS information has become apparent. Recently, the General Services Department, Information Technology Division has collaborated on GIS projects with departments including:
- Department of Community Services
- County Administrator's Office
- Health and Human Service Agency
- Assessor, Clerk/Recorder, Elections
- Sheriff Department
- Child Support Services
- Agricultural Department
This class will allow individual departments to enhance their knowledge of GIS while continuing to develop their skill set utilizing technology and resources available to them through the County's GIS program. These resources include, but are not limited to: access data created by the County GIS team, utilize tools for simple data analysis, create data that is important to their individual department and to share maps within the department and with the public. A goal of this training is to be able to provide departments with expanded tools in utilizing GIS data in order to make data driven decisions. This funding request includes participation of up to 15 county staff. If sought independently, training for 15 employees would cost approximately $30,000. The on-site training provides the County with an immediate cost savings.
GIS is a priority in the Board-approved IT Framework of 2018. Further, this training will give staff the skills necessary to train others in the future and ongoing. |
