Reason for Recommended Action/Background |
Increased traffic at the intersection of South River Road makes a multi-way stop intersection warranted and advisable.
BACKGROUND
The intersection of South River Road with the Freeport Bridge over the Sacramento River is currently a tee intersection with a stop sign on the Freeport Bridge leg of the intersection. Since the Consumnes River Interchange on Interstate 5 opened and with the advent of traffic applications such as WAZE and Google Maps, both the bridge and South River Road have seen an increase in traffic. Based on concerns expressed by members of the public on both the amount of traffic and backups at the intersection, staff conducted a traffic survey on all three legs of the intersection in May of 2017.
A review of the data reveals that the volume of traffic meets the California Manual of Traffic Control Devices (CA-MUTCD) warrants for a multi-way stop intersection. The average daily number of vehicles entering the intersection (from all three legs) is 5,609 vehicles per day, with Freeport Bridge being the leg with the largest amount of traffic.
Staff presented the data and findings to the Clarksburg Fire Protection District and the Clarksburg General Plan Citizens Advisory Committee and both groups were supportive of placement of stop signs on South River Road. |
