Reason for Recommended Action/Background
The Yolo County Health Council is an advisory body comprised of representatives from stakeholders around the County, including the County’s major health systems (Communicare, Sutter, Kaiser, UC Davis, and Dignity), as well as patients and providers. The Council’s primary purpose is to consider major health issues that impact Yolo County with the goal of advising and making recommendations to the Board of Supervisors and the Director of Public Health. Issues considered by the Health Council include the state of the health of our community, health risks, community services (existing and needed), and assessment of resources needed to improve the overall health outcomes in Yolo County. Additional advocacy and coordination roles include, ensuring efficient use of existing and planned resources, fostering communication among stakeholders, and providing assistance to local, state and regional health services planning efforts and other planning councils and commissions.

The Council relies on the following vision, mission, and core values to guide their work:

Vision: To improve overall health outcomes in Yolo County

Mission: Serve as an advisory body to the Yolo County Board of Supervisors to assure, support, and advocate for public health services across Yolo County.

Core Values: Value & promote the mission of public health; visibility; education & information sharing; knowledge of key department efforts; advocacy; collaboration; communication; action oriented; member participation; community engagement & awareness; and policy decisions

The Council developed the following strategic priorities for 2014-2015:

1. Support Work Groups to Accomplish Completion of Work Plans for
  • Oral Health
  • Elderly Falls
  • Suicide & Self-Harm Prevention
  • Immunizations

2. Department Integration

  • Provide feedback to Health & Human services analysis/report
  • Provide input and support to Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health and Health Department shared leadership structure and potential integration
3. Support Healthy Yolo Project
  • Participate on committees
  • Communicate efforts and activities through organizations
4. Sustain and enhance public health efforts
  • Prevention, promotion & education services/programs
5. Health Council Role
  • Further define purpose
  • Establish annual priorities
  • Focus agendas around accomplishing goals & objectives of Strategic Priorities
  • Strengthen member engagement
  • Enhance value of meetings for members
  • Coordinate efforts with related advisory boards to reduce duplication
  • Advise Board on healthy policy decisions
  • Submit an annual report to the County Board of Supervisors
