Recommended Action |
Approve and authorize John Young, Agricultural Commissioner, to sign Agreement 15-0293-SF between the State of California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the County of Yolo Agriculture Department for County staff to use the Detector Dog Team to detect the presence of any unwanted plant pests in parcels, airfreight and nursery stock, including species, diseases or other harmful organisms that may pose a threat to the economic well-being of the State. |

Reason for Recommended Action/Background |
The United States Postal Service (USPS) distribution center in West Sacramento, California now serves 20 counties in central and northern California. Yolo County inspectors have been working with the Sacramento County based canine unit to inspect a sample of the parcels moving through the USPS facility, and have intercepted many pests of quarantine significance.
This agreement provides necessary funding to expand the successful USPS dog team inspection program for the 2015-2016 fiscal year. |

Funding for dog team inspections is included in the Agriculture Department's 2015-2016 budget. The cost for postal inspections will be offset by reimbursement from the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). |
