Reason for Recommended Action/Background |
The General Services Department is requesting General fund contingency funds to replace several magnetic door locks throughout the County on various facilities. The magnetic locks are comprised of an electromagnetic component alongside an armature plate. One of the issues with these types of locks is they require a constant supply of electricity. Should a power outage occur, the locks then rely on batteries to keep the door locked; however, should the batteries fail, and a constant electrical current is lost the locks will not properly work. During a recent storm multiple County locations lost their power supply and the locks failed, creating a possible security breach.
To ensure ongoing security, General Services will be replacing all of the magnetic exterior door locks with an electronic strike style lock. This style of lock will ensure if power is lost it is in a failsafe locked position, a technology the magnetic locks do not provide. |
