Reason for Recommended Action/Background |
The Yolo Library was built in 1925 and is the oldest building in our library portfolio. In recent years, the facility has begun to show significant decay as well as experienced foundation settling which has caused additional damage to the facility. Yolo Library has the distinction of being a Carnegie Library, and as such, was granted listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The Yolo Library is a wood structure, one of very few Carnegie libraries built of wood in the United States. In addition to being in very poor condition, the facility is undersized in relation to its current use.
As identified in the County's recently approved strategic space utilization study, the Yolo Library is a high priority for replacement. In order to proceed with replacement of the facility, architectural work will need to occur in order to determine the size and type of facility to be built/purchased.
This agenda item authorizes up to $50,000 of development impact fees to be utilized on architectural and design work as well as funds that may be necessary to remove the old building from the National Register.
The recommendations of the architect will be brought to the Board in late summer 2015 for additional Board direction. |
